I met my IAM observer, Ian Souter, for my third observed ride at Woburn Triumph. Thankfully when I arrived there the sun was shining but I had ridden through a thunderstorm with some hailstones thrown in along the way so I was hoping the sun would dry me out a little!

I read an excellent report recently from the TRL Academy - Transport 2020: Addressing future mobility needs which sets out expert views on many of the challenges for society as we move towards more autonomous and connected vehicles. The report poses lots of questions – for many it will take several years before we have a definitive answer.

What are the implications of poor eyesight and driving? According to official UK government statistics, in 2020, uncorrected or defective vision was a contributory factor in 10 fatal crashes, 56 serious injury crashes and 99 slight injury crashes.

I’ve now had my first observed ride as part of my IAM RoadSmart course and I’ve got to say it was really good. I was apprehensive before I met up with my observer, Ian Souter, about what to expect.
