I confirm I have paid or will pay an amount of Income Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) that is at least equal to the amount of tax that all Charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs) that I donate to will reclaim on my gifts for that tax year. I understand that it is my responsibility to inform the Institute of Advanced Motorists Ltd if I pay less Income Tax and/or Capital Gains tax in any year than the amount of Gift claimed on all my qualifying donations and that it is my responsibility to pay any difference. If you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate and want to receive the additional tax relief due to you, you must include all your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment tax return or ask HM Revenue and Customs to adjust your tax code.

Frequently asked questions

Q. What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a government scheme that allows charities to reclaim the tax that you have already paid on your donations (in our case your membership subscription) through UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax.

All individual donations (excluding those made through the Charities Aid Foundation, which are already subject to tax relief) are eligible for the scheme. We can claim Gift Aid on your subscriptions made in the last four years and on your future subscriptions.

Q. Will Gift Aid cost me anything?

Gift Aid doesn’t cost you a penny. By agreeing, it means that we can reclaim the tax on your membership subscription, if you are a UK taxpayer, directly from HMRC.

Q. Are there any hidden charges?

No. Gift Aid is taken from tax you’ve already paid, so there’s no charge to you. It doesn’t affect your tax status either.

Q. Am I eligible for Gift Aid?

To be eligible you must be a UK taxpayer, paying tax on your salary, savings, investments, pensions or capital gains. All these qualify, if the total tax you pay is at least equal to the amount we, and other charities you donate to, can reclaim on your donations.

Q. What if I am a pensioner?

You may still be paying tax on a private pension plan or a savings account, or pay Capital Gains Tax if you sell property or shares. You are still eligible if you have paid enough tax during the year to cover your donations (i.e. 25% of the value of your gifts).

Q. How much more will my donations be worth?

For every donation you give, we receive an extra 25% from the government. So if your annual subscription to IAM RoadSmart is £37, we receive an additional £9.25 from the government. It also counts for your past annual subscription up to four years ago.

Q. Do I have to make a declaration for every donation?

No. Once you’ve signed up for Gift Aid you won’t have to do it again for IAM RoadSmart. You should however, let us know if your tax status changes.

Q. What if I give through Gift Aid to other charities?

You can Gift Aid all your donations to different charities – you just have to tick the Gift Aid declaration for each charity or Community Amateur Sports Club you support, and make sure you pay enough tax to cover them.

Q. What do you do with my donation to make roads safer?

Our core contribution to road safety is the driver and rider training we deliver through our dedicated and skilled volunteers nationwide. We know that better driver and rider behaviour and the skills we share through on-road coaching can reduce the risks we all face on the roads and contribute to road safety overall.

Who are IAM RoadSmart?

We are an independent road safety organisation and registered charity. Our financial support is provided by our 100,000+ strong membership. Your annual subscription helps support our valuable work in promoting driving and riding safety.
