The thought of driving abroad can, at first, seem intimidating, yet it can also be hugely rewarding. Not only is it a great way to see where you’re visiting, it’s also a fantastic experience as you can often experience wide open, virtually deserted roads that are, literally, a world away from the ones in the UK.

Over 40 Observers from the two clubs, together with two guests from the Plymouth group, all met in Tiverton, Dorset, for a successful weekend of Observer training.

Rural roads are major and minor roads outside our towns and cities, and at times they can be difficult to navigate. Many of them are narrow, with blind bends and limited safe places to pass, and have no pavement or cycle paths.

It was a shock when I retired to Cornwall aged 60 and finding out that my 45 years riding in and around London had in no way prepared me for life on two wheels in rural Cornwall.
