Course overview

Our Rider Development Session offers 4 hours of on-road training designed to refine your riding skills, making each ride more enjoyable.

Tailored to your specific needs, this session is ideal for any licenced motorcyclist with their own bike, regardless of experience level.

About the session 
This half-day, 1-to-1 skills development session pairs you with an expert IAM RoadSmart Observer. Designed to sharpen your riding abilities, the session focuses on improving decision-making and making riding more intuitive. Covering five key competencies, you can choose areas to concentrate on (depending on local availability):

  • Motorways and Dual Carriageways
  • Overtaking
  • Junctions and Roundabouts
  • Bends and Cornering
  • Core Riding Skills
Based on Advanced Riding techniques, this session focuses on developing your Observation, Anticipation, and Planning skills.

You'll have the opportunity to agree a date and time that suits you.

  • England (South): Bournemouth, Devon, East Sussex, Kent, Oxford, South East London.
  • England (East Anglia): Cambridge.
  • England (Midlands): Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Wolverhampton.
  • England (North): Harrogate, Leeds, Manchester, Rotherham, South Cheshire, South Lancashire, Sefton, Merseyside.
  • Wales: South Wales.
  • Scotland: Parts of Dundee, Falkirk, Perth.

What to expect from your session

1. Introduction & Goals: Meet your Observer and discuss what you hope to achieve.
2. Pre-Ride Checks & Briefing: A quick review of your bike and a safety briefing.
3. On-Road Training: Spend around 3 hours on the road, starting with a rider assessment. Your Observer will offer guidance based on IPSGA (Information, Position, Speed, Gear, and Acceleration) with regular breaks for coaching and comfort.
4. Debrief: The session ends with a debrief, along with tips and guidance to continue improving your skill

The Rider Development Session is ideal for any licensed motorcycle rider looking to improve their skills. Whether you’ve just passed your test or have been riding for years, this session offers valuable insights. It’s also a great steppingstone if you’re considering the Advanced Rider course.

Additional Costs
Your Observer is a volunteer who will use their own motorcycle during the session - some Observers may request a contribution toward their fuel costs.
