Dan Given became Lisburn Advanced Motorcyclist’s (LAM) youngest ever Advanced rider when he passed his test in September 2021, aged 19.
Dan has been riding motorcycles on the road since gaining his CBT (50cc) on 19th May 2018, his 16th birthday. A month later he obtained his A1 license and spent the next two years honing his skills on a 125cc machine. Then on 19th May 2021 Dan obtained his A2 license CBT and a week later gained his A2 license, there was no stopping him.
Dan immediately signed up for his IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course with LAM and commenced his journey to becoming an advanced rider in the company of his Observer, Ian Barr.
On 16th September 2021 Dan completed this journey and passed his advanced rider test, making him the youngest advanced rider.
LAM members acknowledge Dan’s exemplary record of personal achievement and welcome him as a full group member. In turn, Dan has thanked his Observer and the other group members who helped prepare his for his demonstration ride and successful test performance.
Dan Given said: “I did the advanced course to improve my safety on the road and to enhance my understanding of it as well. The course has dramatically changed my riding, I used to be less observant and take more risks. I have learned to restrain myself in dangerous situations and to take in more information on the road to allow myself a greater amount of time to react to possible hazards. From the course I have gained much more understanding of the road and feel more confident about my safety on it. I’ve also gained a lot of experience and have become a more capable rider.”
is Advanced Rider Course just after his 19th birthday, fresh from obtaining his A2 license. He was very familiar with the Highway Code and had been well drilled in machine control technique. This has proved advantageous with other similarly newly qualified riders who have come to LAM allowing for them to be introduced to IPSGA from the very first session. Young riders are therefore equipped with advanced riding skills from the very beginning of their riding lives, keeping them safer on the roads from day one.
Raymond Clarke, Chair at Lisburn Advanced Motorcyclists, said: “Dan embarked on his Advanced Rider Course just after his 19th birthday, fresh from obtaining his A2 license. “LAM offers young riders a warm welcome and LAM’s Observer cadre is receptive to their needs, coaching in a welcoming and relaxed environment. There is an active social element to the Group in which riding tips and advice are freely given.
“In return young riders ensure that Members remain in touch with their riding roots and bring much appreciated new blood and life experiences to the Group. We all learn from each other.”
