Mastering the Masters

Our Masters program allows you to build on your skills as an existing Advanced Road user and will help you reach the highest standard of civilian driving or riding ability in the country, which has been based off the Police driver or rider handbook "Roadcraft." 

One of our Area Service Delivery Managers (ASDM), Shaun Cronin, has shared his experience of a recent test he was examining and explains how the process works.  

Taking the first step 

Once a member buys an IAM RoadSmart course, they are assigned a mentor who will take them through several structured sessions of driver or rider development. Our mentors are quality-assured by our ASDM team and are personally invited to be a mentor in their region. 

Masters assessment 

 The route and location of the Masters test are chosen by the examiner to ensure a fair assessment of their skills by choosing roads the candidate is unfamiliar with. The test is around 50 miles, one and a half hours in duration, and on a variety of roads. This should be an enjoyable experience for both the candidate and the examiner.  

Shaun’s recent examination  

 Shaun recently examined a Masters test for Ashley Rudd, who received a Distinction after a skilled ride. Ashley has gone from being a new member in 2020 to a local and national observer, now followed by a Masters in 3 years. Later this year, he takes up the Chair position at Cornwall Advanced Riders too.
