Here at IAM RoadSmart, we’re the UK’s leading road safety charity and have spent more than 60 years making Britain’s roads safer. Our Advanced Rider course has helped thousands of riders gain additional on-road knowledge and skills, above and beyond what is taught when you learn to drive.
The course is delivered by our network of over 170 affiliated Local Groups. Below you can find out more about the course itself, and Glasgow Advanced Motorists and Motorcyclists, your local IAM RoadSmart Group.

Glasgow South Group of Advanced Motorists and Motorcyclists was formed in 1957, just one year after the Institute of Advanced Motorists (now IAM RoadSmart). The main aim of the Group has always been to promote better driving throughout our local area.
By running courses, they coach drivers and riders up to standard to eventually take the IAM RoadSmart advanced tests. The Group also gives talks and presentations on Advanced driving and riding, as well as on other related topics. They have over 130 members across both the car and bike sections and are always welcoming new members to join them to help make local roads safer.

We believe that the best way to know what to expect from becoming an Advanced Rider is to hear from those who have gone through the experience themselves. We asked two recent Advanced Riders from Glasgow what they thought of their time on the course, and the group itself.
"I passed my driving test as soon as possible when I was 17 and have enjoyed decades of driving and motorcycling since then. I'd always considered myself a relaxed and competent rider but self-doubt crept in. Add to that the odd comment from my wife about how some events on the road seem to come as a surprise, and it convinced me the time had come.
The course with the Glasgow South branch was excellent. The observer system is educational without being judgemental. It's amazing how few surprises you find on the roads when you think a bit harder about potential hazards and your position on the tarmac. I enjoyed the course so much that I went on to do the Masters course! Whatever your motivation, I'd recommend an IAM RoadSmart course to anyone and if you're lucky enough to be in the Glasgow South area it's a great group to do it with. "
