T5 Open Destination Ride to Hornsea. Mark Rodger 8th December 2018

Posted on 21/12/18 |
There we were at Squires wondering among ourselves who was going to lead the ride when a voice said "I've got a route".  Mark was quickly assigned to ride leader for the day and declared we would be going to Hornsea via Withernsea.  A quick briefing with Dave Hardcastle volunteering for back marker before 7 bikes lined up in the car park for the off.

It was the usual route through Sherburn and Cawood across to the A19 and then in and out of Escrick.  Then a circular route via Wheldrake and Skipwith before turning right in North Duffield and right again at Bubwith, we then wiggled our way through Brieghton and Wressle before briefly picking up the A614 and turning left off here to Eastrington.  After crossing the M62 a left turn put us on the B1230 through Gilberdyke and we stayed on this lovely road through North Cave before eventually turning right to our tea stop at South Cave, a great first half.

The stop was at a very nice farm shop (can't remember the name) where because of the time of year they were running a Santa Claus camp (or should that be a camp Santa Claus?), anyway the tea serving took a while giving Steve time to banter with the Elf before we set off on the second half of the ride.

Mark was expressing concern that we were going to have to engage with traffic on the Clive Sullivan Way to get through Hull, in the event we managed it fairly quickly and the second half of the ride more than made up for it.

As soon as we'd cleared Hull we turned off the main road and on to the B1362 to Hedon, staying on this glorious road through Burstwick and all the way through to Withernsea.  Without stopping we turned North out of Withersea to pick up the B1242 which then goes all the way to Hornsea.  I guess many of you reading this will have ridden this road but if you haven't you really must do it.  It's a good surface with mile after mile of  bend after bend after bendIMG_20181208_142633, many with good cross views and with little traffic, by the rime we got to the fish and chip restaurant in Hornsea there was a big grin on everyone's face reflecting the huge enjoyment to be had from this road.

Suitably replenished Mark then led the group back to Seaways via Beverly and Wetwang for the final stop of the day, unfortunately the weather caught up with us by now (it was good and dry prior to this) and it was pretty wet by the time we reached Fridaythorpe.  It's not often we get out this way with T5 but the roads Mark found today shows we should do it more often.

Thanks for a great ride Mark and to Dave H for back marker duties.
