A trip to the coast at Withernsea Chris Otter 18th March 2023

Posted on 20/03/23 |
It was a little warmer than of late with no risk of ice and whilst the forecast was for showers it was warm and dry as nine Team 5 members gathered for the pre ride briefing.  With an outline of the route, planned stops explained and Pete Tidball volunteered as back marker the group lined up and set off on time.

Turning right out of Squires we followed the usual roads through to Escrick and from there on to Bubwith and Holme On Spalding Moor. After passing south of Market Weighton and skirting the northern edge of Beverley we landed at our first planned stop IMG_20230318_141403at Cherry Lane garden centre and still no sign of showers so far.  Suitably refreshed we remounted to head for the second stop of the day at Withernsea.

Turning left out of the Garden Centre traffic was busy and some filtering was needed for a short while until a right turn took us out of the traffic and back on to familiar Team 5 roads.  Passing Meaux, Old Ellerby, Coniston and Ganstead as we twisted and turned our way past the East of Hull towards Preston.  Before reaching Preston a left turn put us on the road to Burton  Pidsea, Roos and on to the lovely B1242 all the way down to Withernsea.  The Castle Cafe at Withernsea is right on the seafront and you can eat lunch whilst gazing out over the North Sea towards the busy wind farm out on the water.

Some of the group departed for home after lunch while the balance climbed back on the bikes for the final leg back to Fimber, if it was open or Seaways.  Retracing our route back up the B1242 for a while we turned right staying on the B1242 heading for Aldbrough and staying on this road all the way up to Hornsea.  Coming out of Hornsea down the north side of the Mere we turned right towards Bewholme and the through Beeford and North Frodingham on our way to Driffield.  Out of Driffield up the hill to Cowlam and from here into Sledmere and out towards Fimber.  It was at this point that the first rain spots of the day appeared, prior to this it had been a warm dry day.  At the bottom of the hill a look to the left at the roundabout showed the Teapot indicating Fimber was open and we turned in for the final "cuppa" of the day, and the rains came.

Thanks to everybody for making it an enjoyable ride and to Pete for back marker duties.
