‘By George’ Perfect timing. Alan Broom's ride to Breighton 16/07/2022
It was a beautiful Saturday morning as about 25 bikes (members & guests) gathered at Squires to hear a brief pre ride brief for the social ride to Breighton air field where the Real Aeroplane club had invited Team 5 to ‘G for George’ day.
The Ride itself was a normal, if a bit short, half day one. Left out of Squires Fairburn via Ledsham on to Haddlesey, Carlton, Gowdall etc eventually heading for the Crown Garden center just south of Whitely Bridge. Things went a bit pear shaped between Hensall & Pollington when the group got separated by the unmanned level crossing on Heck lane and then 2 of the flock decided to make their own route up, missed the right turn off Broach lane and carried on towards Snaith. Graham volunteered to play shepherd and go to retrieve them. Meanwhile, via a hurriedly modified route including a thinly disguised U turn tour of a small housing estate, the rest of us made it safely to The T & P at the Crown Garden center.
Once everyone including the two strays had had their comfort break and Mark had organised a quick photo shoot in the car park, we set off for stage two of the ride.
This also had to be hastily modified due to the passage of time. So it was basically north up the A19 as far as Burn, right onto common lane to the A1041, going left took us to the Selby bypass which got us across the river. Once passed Selby we took the Hull road as far as Loftsome Bridge after which a sharp left saw us on the final approach, through Wressle, to Breighton where we found the airfield to be a hive of activity with lots of interesting things to see. The land army ‘Girl’ manning the gate advised us to park where ever we could. This was apt as the place was buzzing.
We did all manage to find places to park & were just beginning to explore when we heard the distinctive drone off the four Merlin Engines that heralded the arrival of the BBMF Lancaster. Yes we had made it in perfect time for a magnificent two pass, flypast, of this historic aircraft, accompanied by the Driffield silver band playing the Dambusters March.
In all Team 5 and guests had a great day out, some of us were still there soaking up the atmosphere late into the afternoon, four of us even took up the invitation to return for the hanger dance in the evening.
