Who Are We?
Swindon Advanced Motorists (SAM) is one of over 200 local IAM RoadSmart affiliated groups throughout the UK (all are charitable organisations in their own right) and provide support for people wanting to prepare for, and pass, the IAM RoadSmart Advanced Test, this is unparalleled throughout the UK. The support of the group means that the Advanced Test is available and achievable by everyone who has an interest in improving their driving. Our qualified Observers are volunteers, tested by us and accredited by the Institute of the Motoring Industry (IMI).
SAM are privileged to have their own Magic Roundabout, providing Associates with endless fun, honing their roundabout and anticipation skills with their Observers who, at some point in their driving careers, have been just where you are sitting now, learning to be an Advanced Motorist in a safe and enjoyable environment.
Regular meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month, except August, at The Blunsdon House Hotel in Broad Blunsdon and include interesting talks by members of the Emergency Services, the IAM itself and members of the Motoring Industry, plus quizzes from time to time.
You are more than welcome to come along to any meeting before you make a commitment. If you have teenagers taking or who have just taken their Driving Test, please bring them along too.
IAM RoadSmart is a totally independent organisation
IAM RoadSmart is not owned or financially dependent on any commercial organisation that might have a vested interest in a narrow aspect of road safety. Financial support is provided by our 100,000+ strong UK (and beyond) membership.
These members, having passed our advanced driving or riding test, contribute a small annual membership fee. This allows us to be fully independent in both our thinking and our work. The support we have from our members, who take an active interest in their own driving and riding standards, provides us with invaluable insight and a vast resource of practical knowledge related to road safety.
Our Advanced Driving Test is recognised and quality assured by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA)
It was first developed in 1956. Since then the test has been developed and refined to reflect the ever-changing face of the UK’s roads.
