Sunday 14th August 2016 saw the big red gazebo get another airing at the Wythall Carnival, held at the Wythall Community Park. This event generally gets a good attendance and this year was no exception. It is also an event at which we tend to attract a fair bit of interest. Again, this year was no exception.
The official opening time of the Carnival is 1:00pm, but the park is open to the public before then (there is no entry fee) so members of the public start to arrive well before the opening time. Therefore, we set ourselves up at 11:30am. Peter Skinner (Treasurer), David Rogers and Abdul Shakoor (Full Members), Arthur Williams (Associate Member) and I set up the stand and, with arrival of Susan Bloor (Associate Member) just before noon, constituted the morning shift, which saw a steady flow of interest.
Steve Price (Chairman) arrived just before 1:00pm, having just got out of bed after working a nightshift, and at around 2:00pm David Heath (Membership Secretary)arrived, both regular event volunteers. Mid-afternoon saw a bit of a shift changeover among the volunteers as gradually Susan, Abdul, and Arthur left, to be replaced at around 3:00pm by Dave Fraley (Training Coordinator) and Bernadette Mason (Secretary), and shortly afterwards by Mike Colyer (Observer).
The afternoon continued to be busy almost right up until the official closing time of 5:00pm, at which time we called it a day, took down the gazebo, and packed the kit back into my car.
As stated earlier, we usually do well at the Wythall Carnival, and this year we managed a very creditable 17 people signed up for assessment drives. We hope that a fair number of these will be converted into Associate Members.
Once again, on behalf of the Committee, I'd like to thank all the volunteers who came along to help out. Without them we would not be able to attend the events we do.
Our next, and last for 2016, event will be Solihull Fun in the Park, which will be held on Sunday 18th September 2016. This will also be the last outing for the bright red cover on the gazebo, as the new IAM branding means we will have to use a blue one. As always we will be looking for volunteers to help on the day, so, if you are a Member of Solihull Advanced Motorists, and feel able to spare a couple of hours to lend a hand, and in the process enjoy what is usually a fun experience, please come along. Even if you can't help, but are visiting the event anyway, please stop by and say hello. I look forward to meeting you there.
