Sunday 31st July saw our first outing of summer 2016, at the Sheldon Country Festival. This is the first time we have attended this event, having planned to attend last year but cancelling due to torrential rain.
The Sheldon Country Festival, organised by Birmingham City Council, is held on Sheldon Country Park, and is traditionally well attended by the general public. This year, thanks to a very pleasant sunny day, was no exception. There was an adjacent funfair and a large variety of stands. Unlike most other events we have attended the stand locations are not allocated in advance, so it was very much a case of ‘first come, first served’. However, we were directed to a spot which was on the direct path from the public car park and funfair, so there was a steady stream of visitors passing by.
We spoke to a wide range of people about advanced driving and its benefits and seven people signed up for free assessment drives, with several other people taking leaflets. We hope to turn some or all of these into Associate Members in time for our September Theory Course.
Grateful thanks to the volunteers who helped out on the day: Committee Members Steve Price, Gerry Tobin, Dave Fraley, Bernadette Mason, and Glen Bell; Observers David Heath and Carol Seale; and Full Member Mark Hope-Urwin. Steve's wife Caroline also helped out and kept us on track, and in fact signed up after the event as a new Associate Member.
