Off siding when training associates:

Further to the recent note sent out setting out the SLAP approach to off-siding, we wanted to clarify that all associate training must be safe and legal and hence comply with the Highway Code.

Highway Code Rule 127 and Rule 160 clearly state, on two way roads, that the road user should keep to their side of the centre line markings unless conducting an over take, turning off or passing parked vehicles. Therefore, when training associate and encouraging them to gain a view on bends or take the straightest course through a series of bends, they should be instructed not to cross the centre line, but remain on their side of the road.

Where there are no centre line markings a discussion around using the width of the road to gain a view in conjunction with the use of the limit point should take place as per the ARC training material. As an Observer you can use SLAP in the same way as you would Roadcraft, to help further explain/explore the potential benefits of moving across the width of the road to gain a view if other attempts aren't working. CAM recognises that movement to the right hand side must be on a case by case basis, but does not recommend moving over more than 70% of the road width.
