Young Driver Skills Day logo

Our Young Driver Skills Day, hosted on 22nd August 2024, is a chance for 17–30-year-olds to learn new skills and gain additional driving knowledge through a thrilling half day experience at Thruxton circuit.

The day consists of multiple experiences, allowing you to develop your driving skills in a range of vehicles and terrain which you may not have experienced before!

Learn more about car control, try out new techniques on circuit and off-road, all under the guidance of IAM RoadSmart driving experts and surrounded by like-minded drivers.

WHAT HAPPENS ON THE DAY?

The Skills Day is split into two sessions, you can book onto the morning or the afternoon.
After a short briefing session, the fun begins! In four groups of eight you’ll rotate around four skills development sessions, getting a taste of each experience, spending about 45 minutes per activity.

SKID PAN

In a safe and controlled environment, we will help you develop the skills needed to correct and control a sliding car, a situation that you may encounter on the public roads. Not only is this great fun, but more importantly a hugely worthwhile investment in your own and your passengers' safety.
Unlike many venues, Thruxton uses modern front and rear-wheel drive cars so that you will understand and feel how the electronic safety systems, fitted as standard to most cars, will help in adverse conditions, but also how to control a sliding car when all the systems are switched off relying on pure driver skill.
We feel this will give you the best preparation for anything the roads and weather may throw at you!

4x4 OFF-ROAD

Bring the speed right down; the 4x4 course requires a different driving skill. Patience, caution and control are needed as you test yourself off-road.
After a short briefing including vehicle familiarisation, you will take to the 4x4 course. Overcoming steep inclines & declines, rocks, mud water and a host of other obstacles in a terrain that looks impossible for wheeled access.
All this is great fun, it takes some patience but is hugely satisfying when you get it right.

CIRCUITS

Drive the latest Porsche Cayman on Thruxton’s historic circuit. This is the generation 2 Cayman with the 2.9 litre engine and manual gearbox. This driving experience is designed to get you out on track with an instructor by your side, in one of the most rewarding two seat sports cars in the world.

AUTO-TEST

In a Mazda MX5 use control, precision and speed to drive around a cone circuit against the clock to be crowned the winner of the day. The aim of an autotest is to negotiate as quickly as possible a low-speed course without hitting any markers - it is all about car control!

BOOKING

Each half day costs just £149 and offers an exclusive selection of on track and off-road experiences in one session!

ABOUT THRUXTON

Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire is an FIA and Motorsport UK licenced venue.
Thruxton was originally a wartime airfield. Commissioned in 1941 the airfield was host to both the RAF and USAF and played a major part in the D-Day landings as a base for troop-carrying aircraft and gliders. Motorsport started in 1950 on a track comprising both the runways and perimeter roads.
Thruxton has seen current Formula 1 drivers race at the track during their careers and hosts the high-speed rounds of the British Touring Car Championship and British Superbike Championship.
