Keira’s advanced driving journey began with her Dad, who had previously taken an advanced driving course whilst working for the Police, and had seen the benefits first-hand.
Keira Brown, 19, passed her driving test in March 2022 and had been driving for a year when her Dad saw IAM Lincolnshire’s partnership scheme with Police and Crime Commissioner, Marc Jones.
The Young Driver Project sees fully funded Advanced Driver Course for 17-24 year olds) across Lincolnshire. Keira’s deposit was quickly paid, and her advanced journey began in the summer of 2023.
Keira said “My Dad wanted me to get some of the driving skills and knowledge he’d learnt during his advanced driving course. As a young driver, insurance costs are so expensive and you are more at risk of having an accident. I wanted to be more confident as well.”
Keira worked on improving her techniques, following advice from her observer and understanding the competencies in the Advanced Driver Course handbook. The course takes place over around 8-10 drives over a 4-6 month period. During her observed drives, Keira found that her observations improved and this helped plan for hazards proactively, rather than reacting. ‘Spoken thought’ whilst driving helped her to notice road signs and marking, anticipating hazards, and dealing with these effectively.
Following 10 drives and a check drive with another observer to check her progress had made the standard, Keira’s test came on a wintery morning in January.
Keira said “I felt I was ready for the test, so I was really pleased to pass. I enjoyed the whole course and now I’m trying to encourage my friends and family to do it. I feel much safer and more confident on the road now and the course has really benefitted me.”
Congratulations to Keira on her advanced driving achievement.
