Reflective road studs may be used with white lines

With the darker nights, the importance of reflective road studs (or cats' eyes) rises.  Colloquially named after the way cats' eyes eerily reflect light in the dead of night, they are often a vital guide, especially now overhead lights are often turned off to save energy / prevent light pollution.  But can you remember all the different colours and what they represent?  

There are five different colours, most often found all together on the motorway.  They are used to delineate different parts of the road and carriageways.  In these darker nights, knowing your cats' eyes could make a significant difference to your safety on the roads.  They are:

- White studs mark the lanes or the middle of the road.
- Red studs mark the left edge of the road.
- Amber studs mark the central reservation of a dual carriageway or motorway.
- Green studs mark the edge of the main carriageway at lay-bys and slip roads.
- Green/yellow studs indicate temporary adjustments to lane layouts,
     e.g. where road works are taking place.
